The classical onion from Lucca, is historically recognized as a local varietyand especially common in the Piana di Lucca near the city, is in fact a cultivartypical of this area and is grown only here, still with traditional systems. The bulb has a rounded and long shape with white skin mottled red when fresh, completely red when dry. It has a sweet and not very spicy taste, as well asthe smell. The texture is medium, the leaves green and yellow. Its main features are the unusual shape and taste. The packaging is traditionally fan-shaped for fresh onions and intertwined for dried ones. In the kitchen, the onion of Lucca is excellent both for raw use in vinaigrettes and to cook dishes such as traditional soup or pasta with onions and fried.
