Emergency abandoned olive trees: an appeal for our landscape
The Municipality of Lucca launches an urgent appeal for the protection of our landscape and
our olive-growing tradition: the ‘Save the Olive Trees’ project. This initiative aims to combat the abandonment of olive groves in our territory, a phenomenon that threatens our agricultural and environmental identity.
Why urgent action is needed
In Tuscany, it is estimated that over 4 million olive trees have been abandoned, with a potential economic value of around £85-140 million lost each year.
In the province of Lucca, in particular, many mountainous and hilly areas – such as Garfagnana and Alta Versilia – are characterised by terraced olive groves that are difficult to reach and maintain due to the terrain and high costs.
An opportunity for everyone
From 1st December 2025 to 31st July 2026, all companies in the province of Lucca are invited to participate in the project by adopting and caring for at least 100 olive trees for a minimum period of five years.
This commitment not only contributes to the preservation of agricultural heritage, but also offers economic opportunities through the production of high-quality extra virgin olive oil.
Recognition for commitment
To reward companies that distinguish themselves for the quality and consistency of their restoration activities, the Municipality has established the following awards:
• “Ulivo d’Oro” Award – +1000 adoptions
• “Ulivo d’Argento” Award – +500 adoptions
• “Ulivo di Bronzo” Award – +100 adoptions
These awards represent a certificate of environmental and social responsibility, a sign of attention to the protection of the territory and the promotion of agricultural sustainability.
